Jun 22, 2008 | What’s Happening?

The Happening” lends itself to a series of unfortunate puns (like “what’s happening? There’s something terrible happening!) and the acting falls truly flat on its face: I’m not a big fan of closeups and repeated sequences of Mark Wahlberg telling everyone to shut up, not to mention the fact that Zooey Deschanel, after a pitiful presence in The Hitchhiker’s Guide, continues to be as boring as ever.

However, there is something worthy of note that the BBC picked up on in a completely unrelated report on “One Planet” called Bees and disease in which they report on the real and undeniable truth that bees are strangely disappearing from their hives. While “The Happening” ends up dismissing it as a phenomenon of nature which science will never be able to fully explain, scientists are looking for an explanation, referring to parasites, pollution, and even cellphone masts.

The quote attributed to Albert Einstein (see above) is:

If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination … no more men!

While this quote is unsubstantiated at present, the words are relevant and chilling, and while naysayers may point out that the disappearance of bees has been ongoing for several years now, we might do well to pay attention to the serious nature of what’s Happening behind the movie.
